Parents as Teachers

Parents as Teachers is an evidence-based curriculum that has two components focused on early childhood and follows a home visitation model.

The first component focuses on having a healthy birth weight infant (≥5.5 pounds), which is the main factor in preventing infant mortality, which is nearing a crisis-level in the Memphis area. This component has been tremendously successful at Porter-Leath, with over 94% of low-income, pregnant women giving birth to a healthy birth weight infant. The program is annually evaluated by the University of Tennessee College of Health Sciences. At a cost of only $1,354 per year of service, the investment is very wise, compared to the $35,000 per week NICU stay for a low-birth weight infant, a cost that is often paid by tax payers.

The second component trains parents to be their childs first teacher, stimulating the young mind and helping it to develop. By doing this, parents are preparing their child for a future of academic success, as over 85% of brain development is complete by age three.

In addition AmeriCorps members, Porter-Leath staff members also carry out segments of the program and are stationed at the Binghampton Development Corporation and the Memphis Health Center.

Each September, a baby shower is held to provide community partners to share information with clients and to distribute items to the new mothers. Items are needed for the shower as well as year round! For a list of items, click here.
